Exams are over. Junior year is complete. And after a semester-long internship hunt in Fort Worth, Tx I will be moving for the summer in one week!
During the spring, deviating from my previous experiences, I looked for agency work in Fort Worth. During the process someone told me, if a job doesn't fit with you, do not settle and do not compromise with who you are. At the time I figured I would have no problem but several situations indicated that she might be correct. Then I stumbled upon a nonprofit internship.
Now if anyone knows me they know I love a good nonprofit :) Specifically my desire to help women and children. When I spoke with the executive director we discussed how necessary it was to have a passion for your cause. Needless to say I felt I was in my niche.
Last week I accepted my communications internship with Mothers' Milk Bank of North Texas, a nonprofit organization that recruits mothers to donate breast milk for premature and critically ill infants. Breastfeeding is proven to reduce the risks of complications and illnesses of babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). When mothers of these babies are unable to breastfeed due to medications, health problems or premature delivery, the Mothers' Milk Bank is able to send screened, tested and pasteurized breast milk to hospitals for their needs.
I am so thankful for the opportunity and thrilled to spend my summer assisting the wonderful team at Mothers' Milk Bank. I plan to embrace my experiences in a new city and take advantage of opportunities to learn and grow!
